A robot would be better in the White House than Obama, GOP candidates — Fidel Castro

HAVANA, Cuba (AFP) — Cuban revolutionary icon Fidel Castro said yesterday that a "robot" would be better in the White House than President Barack Obama — or any of the Republican candidates in the 2012 election race.

"Is it not obvious that the worst of all is the absence in the White House of a robot capable of governing the United States and preventing a war that would end the life of our species?" Castro, 85, wrote in one of the "reflections" he often publishes in Cuba's state-controlled media.

Under the title The Best President for the United States, Cuba's ex-president said that if faced with a choice between Obama, a Republican rival or a robot, "90 per cent of voting Americans, especially Hispanics, blacks and the growing number of the impoverished middle class, would vote for the robot."

Obama, Castro said, is "hopelessly immersed in seeking re-election," and "the dreams of (civil rights icon) Martin Luther King are thousands of light years further away than the nearest inhabitable planet."

"Worse still, any of the Republican candidates for the presidency... carry with them more nuclear weapons than ideas for peace," said Castro, alluding to several of the would-be Obama challengers who have called, in particular, for a stronger position against Iran, which the West says is seeking to build an atomic bomb.

Fidel, who handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul in 2006, has rarely held back in his disdain for Obama.

In September he slammed Obama's address to the UN General Assembly as "gibberish" and called the US and NATO intervention in Libya "monstrous crimes."

Vybz Kartel, Gaza Slim to face music

JAILED dancehall entertainers Vybz Kartel and Gaza Slim are scheduled to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court today to answer to charges of conspiracy and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer and Gaza Slim, christened Vanessa Saddler, were remanded into custody when they appeared in court in December.

The charges stem from allegations that text messages were sent from Vybz Kartel to Gaza Slim's cellphone instructing her to make a report to the Constant Spring police that she had been robbed by Clive 'Lizard' Williams. Williams, is the person whose murder Kartel and his associates — Andre St John, Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Cairo Jones, Calvin Haye and Shane Williams — are charged for.

The prosecution is contending that the report was made in order to give the impression that Williams was not dead. But in making a failed bail application for Saddler last month, attorney Pierre Rogers said that the masked man who held up Saddler identified himself as Williams.

Williams is alleged to have been murdered on August 16 over the disappearance of an illegal firearm. His body is yet to be found. The prosecution, however, said they have video and other evidence to prove the murder.

The men are to be tried in the Home Circuit Court for the murder. Kartel, Jones, Campbell and Haye have already been transferred to the circuit court, where they will next appear on January 13.

Williams and St John are to appear in the magistrate's court on January 13 as part of the process to have them join the other accused men in the Home Circuit Court.

On a separate matter, Kartel is to return to the Resident Magistrate's Court on February 13 when he will be tried on a ganja possession charge.

Kartel and his associates are also facing murder and other charges in relation to the shooting death of Barrington 'Bossie' Bryan of Gregory Park, St Catherine in July. He was offered bail to the sum of $3 million in relation to this charge and will next appear in the RM court on today on that charge.

MJ's fans sue doctor

RENNES, France, (AFP) — French fans of Michael Jackson are suing the late pop star's doctor for "emotional damage" they suffered over his death, their lawyer said Friday.

The case against Conrad Murray, who was jailed in November over the star's 2009 death, is due to be heard in the city of Orleans on April 11, lawyer Emmanuel Ludot said.

"It's similar to losing a childhood friend in a traffic accident. Because this death affects you, you have the possibility to file a suit and seek compensation," Ludot said.

The lawyer is acting for around 100 fans who are members of an association that calls itself the "Michael Jackson Community".

He said that while each fan could be awarded damages of up to 10,000 euros (US$13,000 dollars), they were seeking only a symbolic euro.

Jackson, aged 50 at the time of his death, had hired Murray at a salary of US$$150,000 a month to look after him as he rehearsed and embarked on a series of "This is It" planned comeback shows in London.

The star died on June 25, 2009 at his Los Angeles home of an overdose of anaesthetic propofol, taken to help him battle insomnia.

Murray was found guilty in November of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the maximum four years in prison.

Casey Anthony speaks out on YouTube

A YouTube video going viral shows an optimistic Casey Anthony speaking out about her life for the first time since she was found not guilty last summer of killing her daughter Caylee in Florida.

"It's just a little surreal how much things have changed since July and how many things haven't changed," said Anthony, 25, in the four-minute recording made in October that she described as the first installment of her video diary.

Sporting short, blond hair and dark-rimmed glasses in a rare appearance since she went into hiding after the high-profile trial that gripped the nation and outraged many because the not-guilty verdict came despite convincing evidence, she tells of adopting a dog and using a new computer to combat loneliness.

"But the good thing is that things are starting to look up and things are starting to change in a good way. I just hope they stay, things stay good and they only get better."

Calls and email requests from Reuters to several of Anthony's lawyers to confirm her identity on the YouTube video were not returned. But her lawyer Cheney Mason verified to the Orlando Sentinel the woman in the footage was indeed his client.

Mason told the newspaper Anthony was "maintaining some notes for her personal use and for future counseling purposes" and that she had not released the video. The attorney said its publication was "unauthorised," "inappropriate" and under investigation.

A lawyer for Anthony's parents, George and Cindy, said they had concerns after learning of the video diary on Thursday.

"They are concerned that the release of this video or any future videos could endanger their daughter," lawyer Mark Lippman said in a statement. "Cindy and George hope that Casey remains safe wherever she may be."

Anthony's whereabouts have been kept secret by the court for her safety while she serves a one-year probation on check fraud charges.

In the video, her blond hair and glasses contrast with the long, brunette hair she wore during her six-week trial in Orlando. She is sitting in an office chair in a plain paneled room with Venetian blinds, giving no indication of her location.

Anthony never mentions her six-week trial or her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, who prosecutors said was dead for a month before Anthony told anyone the toddler was missing in 2008. She spent two years in jail before the trial.

She is appealing her convictions on four counts of lying to detectives about what happened to Caylee.

Anthony talks about the possibility of getting off probation early in time for her birthday in March and about her solitary life being enriched by the ability to speak on camera.

"This has just been such blessing in so many ways that now I have someone to talk to when I'm by myself so I'm not bothering the poor dog that I've adopted, that I love," she said.

1. Get to the first Home screen

You  have a large number of apps installed. Your most important apps are on the first screen, right? Say you’re currently on screen 7, and want to get to the first screen. Simplyclick the Home button to get there.

 

2. Flip pages by tapping

Many iPhone apps feature a paging system with dots at the bottom of the screen, such as:

• The Home screen
• Safari
• Weather

You probably know that you can flip pages in these apps by swiping left or right across the screen. You can also tap the areas either side of the row of dots at the bottom of the screen:

3. Instantly access iPod controls from anywhere

You want to pause the podcast quickly. Just double-click the Home button, and a window pops up with iPod controls, allowing you to pause, play, skip tracks or adjust the iPod volume:

You can tap the iPod button in the window to go straight to the iPod.

By default, this trick only works if an iPod track is playing. However, you can change the behavior of the Home Button double-click action by going to Settings > General > Home Button:

Choosing Home means that double-clicking has the same effect as single-clicking:  It just takes you to your Home screen.

Phone Favorites: the default setting brings up your favorite contacts for quick dialling. However, if you choose iPod then double-clicking takes you straight to the iPod app regardless of whether a track is playing or not.

You can use the iPod Controls setting to turn off the feature that displays iPod controls when a track is playing.

 

4. Keyboard trick #1: Quickly type a period and space

When you finish typing a sentence, you usually want to type a period, followed by a space. This is a bit awkward as you have to tap the bottom-left Number key, followed by a period, followed by the space bar. The quicker way: just double-tap the space bar.

(If this doesn’t work go to Settings > General > Keyboard and turn the “.” Shortcut option on.)

 

5. Keyboard trick #2:  Type a single number or symbol

The usual way to enter digits or symbols is to tap the Number key then tap the digits or symbols, then tap the Number key (which now shows ABC) again to return to the regular keyboard.

If you only want to type a single digit or symbol Tap and hold the Number key to bring up the number/symbol keyboard and then drag your finger to the digit or symbol you want to type, and let go. This types the digit/symbol and immediately returns you to ABC mode.

 

6. Keyboard trick #3: Caps Lock

The iPhone’s keyboard has a Caps Lock mode for typing all-caps words though it’s disabled by default. To turn it on, go to Settings > General > Keyboard, and turn the Enable Caps Lock switch to ON. When using the keyboard quickly double-tap the Shift key to enable Caps Lock (the Shift key turns blue). Type your capital letters, then tap the Shift key again to turn off  the Caps Lock.

 

7. Keyboard trick #4: Holding down keys for more options

Many keys bring up a list of other symbols or options if you tap and hold them for 1 second. For example:

• Holding down E, Y, U, I, O, A, S, L, Z, C, or N brings up accented letters
• Holding down $ in the number/symbol keyboard displays other currency symbols
• Holding down “ or ‘ in the number/symbol keyboard reveals alternative quote characters
• Holding down ? or ! in the number/symbol keyboard brings up the ¿ or ¡ symbol
• Holding down the .com key when entering internet addresses brings up options for .net, .edu and .org. Thi works when entering email addresses in Mail by tapping and holding the . (period) key.)

 

8. Save drafts in Mail

With the Mac OS X Mail app, it’s easy to save your currently-edited message as a draft by clicking the Save as Draft button in the toolbar.

Saving a draft in the iPhone Mail app: First, from the message editing screen, tap the Cancelbutton. You can then tap Save to save the current message as a draft, or Don’t Saveto delete the message.

 

9. Jump to the top of the page

Sliding up and down to scroll through a internet page, an email message or a list of messages is pretty quick; If you’re near the bottom of a long page or list it takes longer to scroll back up to the top. There’s a faster way to return to the top: just tap the status bar at the top of the screen:

10. Customize the iPod dock icons

You can control what kind of icon shows on your screen: Tap the More icon, then tap theEdit button at the top left of the screen.
